Complying with Employment Laws is Biggest Challenge for Human Resource Managers, According to HR.BLR.com Survey

A new survey at HR.BLR.com reveals that the number one challenge for human resource managers is complying with state and federal employment laws. Other top concerns include topics like retention and performance management. The website is offering a free download of a special report summarizing the findings.

Old Saybrook, CT (Issues Wire / PRWEB) May 4, 2006 -- HR professionals report that compliance with federal and state laws is their most important challenge, according to a survey conducted by the Business & Legal Reports (BLR) website, HR.BLR.com. The human resources website is making available free copies of the entire survey report.

In BLR’s “HR’s Toughest Challenges for 2006” survey, respondents were asked to rate 10 HR challenges in terms of importance, using the following scale: 1-not important, 2-marginally important, 3-important, 4-very important, or 5-extremely important.

Here are the results for the top 5 challenges (average response):

Ensuring compliance with federal and state employment laws 4.11
Retaining talent in an improving economy 4.08
Managing performance 4.05
Developing leadership 4.01
Dealing with rising healthcare costs 3.99

The survey, conducted in February on HR.BLR.com and Compensation.BLR.com drew responses from 536 human resource professionals.

“State and federal employment laws remain a major problem for HR managers, since more respondents (44 percent) rated that challenge as ‘extremely important’ than any other,” said Chris Ceplenski, HR.BLR.com editor. “But from this survey we can also see that the areas of retention, performance management, leadership development, and the containment of healthcare costs are extremely big issues for HR,” Ceplenski concluded.

To download a free copy of the Special Report on HR’s Top Challenges of 2006, go to http://www.blr.com/landingPR/handler4.cfm?source=PRS&effort=108 The Special Report includes the scores of all 10 challenges, along with anonymous comments from 50 of the respondents.

Federal employment and labor laws - such as FMLA, ADA, and equal employment - are vast, complicated subjects that require considerable expertise. But when more stringent state employment laws also must be complied with, the challenge can become overwhelming. BLR’s human resource website, HR.BLR.com, offers practical explanations of federal and all 50 state’s employment laws. The website’s print counterpart, What To Do about Personnel Problems [in Your State also explains—in plain-English— federal and applicable state laws for over 150 employment law topics.
