TRL Software Boosts Math Test Scores, According to Alliant University Study
Eighth grade students who used Total Recall Learning's Fundamentals of Algebra software improved their scores almost twice as much as those in the control group on average, according to AIU's HAWK Study.
San Diego, CA (Issues Wire / PRWEB) May 15, 2007 -- Researchers at Alliant International University recently found Fundamentals of Algebra to be an effective software for helping pre-collegiate students meet the 7th grade Math CAHSEE Standards. Funded by AIU's HAWK Program, the Fall 2006 research project focused on the lowest performing 8th grade math students in the Sweetwater Union High School District GEAR UP Program. A comparison of numbers from pre- and post-tests indicates that students in the experimental group, who worked with Total Recall Learning's pre-algebra software, as a whole improved their scores almost twice as much as those in the control group on average.
"We are very excited because we have created a learning model that teaches mathematics to Hispanic and at-risk students that truly works, and we have the empirical data to prove it," said Richard Gardner, a Title V Mathematics Learning Specialist at AIU. Mr. Gardner authored the software content based on a mix of cognition and language acquisition theories.
Total Recall Learning Inc. designed and developed the software with the aim to ensure long-term memory retention of the critical academic vocabulary needed to succeed in a pre-algebra math class. These basic but essential math concepts - the key to advancement to higher-level courses - often stymie low-performing math students.
Results from paper-based multiple-choice tests administered at the beginning and end of the research period are as follows: Students in the experimental group achieved a score improvement of 15.9% on average, whereas those in the control group attained an increase of only 8.5% on average. Members of the experimental group surpassed their control group counterparts in test performance improvement after using the software for slightly over six hours on average, which translates to approximately 20% completion of the software program.
