Events here at Calais are proof of the building boom that GSA has ignited at our nation’s borders.
The Honorable Lurita Doan, Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), shared the stage with Gov. John Elias Baldacci, Premier Shawn Graham, Sen. Susan M. Collins, Congressman Michael Michaud and Field Operations Director Steven Farquharson of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Dennis R. Smith, Regional Administrator of GSA’s New England Region, served as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which kicked off the start of construction for the new land port at Calais, Maine.

"GSA is making good on our promise to build more capacityat our nation’s ports of entry," said Administrator Doan. "Events here at Calais are proof of the building boom that GSA has ignited at our nation’s borders."

The 70,000-square-foot facility, designed by Robert Siegel Architects of New York, NY, will be built by J&J Construction of Lowell, MA. A construction contract for $48,327,000 was awarded to J&J on Dec. 27, 2007. The 52-acre site, located two miles south of Calais, will provide facilities for the inspection of commercial and passenger vehicles and offices for the Customs and Border Protection agency. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks the official start of construction, which is scheduled to be completed in November 2009.
