Domestic Violence Television Docudrama "Silent Voices" Released as DVD to Raise Funds for National Centre for Domestic Violence

On Monday 22nd September 2008, Producer, Paul Atherton will release his one hour television docudrama "Silent Voices" as a DVD for sale on Amazon.co.uk, to raise funds for the charity NCDV (National Centre for Domestic Violence).

London, UK (Issues Wire / PRWEB) September 15, 2008 -- On Monday 22nd September 2008, Producer, Paul Atherton will release his one hour television docudrama "Silent Voices" as a DVD for sale on Amazon.co.uk, to raise funds for the charity NCDV (National Centre for Domestic Violence).

Silent Voices is based on the real life experiences of over a 100 children affected by domestic violence, interviewed by the screenwriter Barbara Gorna, a victim herself, whilst researching the new domestic violence bill for the Labour government.

In the program seven fictitious characters (representing individuals from all walks of life), in a series of interwoven monologues, tell the real-life events of domestic violence witnessed by the children.

Hoping to prove that the media and charities can work together to mutual advantage, Paul Atherton set up the not-for-profit production company Q&D Productions in 2005 to use the medium of television and film to communicate messages that would normally not receive airtime.

Paul explains this unique fundraising idea "To find normal distribution channels for a DVD that has no obvious commercial return, was prohibitively expensive. Amazon.co.uk provided us the most cost effective way of selling and distributing Silent Voices. The commission they charge of £3.50 per DVD is high out of the retail price of £10, but we get to distribute throughout the UK from an established and trusted online retailer. Our target is to sell 20,000 DVD's over the next year in the hope of raising £100,000 for the charity whilst at the same time raising awareness of the issues of domestic violence within the UK."

Chris Gill, Managing Director of the NCDV Charity says "Paul approached us with the offer of donating all the profits from the sale of his DVD because he understands the importance of what we do. We deal with over a 1,000 calls a week asking for assistance with Court injunctions against perpetrators of domestic violence and we are entirely self-funded and run purely from donations. This offer will assist us greatly in providing our services and we would encourage people to support us by purchasing the Silent Voices DVD."

Notes to Editor:

Silent Voices Trailer

Paul Atherton is most well known as being the first Producer/ Director to have his work shown on the Coca-Cola Billboard in Piccadilly Circus, London in November 2007.

The program was originally shown on The Community Channel in 2005/2006

The program was made by not-for-profit production company, Q&D Productions Limited and was self financed. The Cast and Crew worked for expenses only, the Producer, Paul Atherton, gave of his services free of charge, the Editor, Ralston Humble, the BAFTA nominated DOP (Director of Photography) Colin Clarke and award winning Director, Charles Harris worked way below scale. Only the writer Barbara Gorna was paid rate. The production cost just £15,000 but had production values totaling nearer £150,000 due to the compassion of all those involved.

The production itself touched numerous people not least the female actors who auditioned, many of whom, wanted to be involved with the project because of their own personal experiences of domestic violence.

The program has been hugely successful in getting its message to a UK audience being used by the South Wales Probation Service to explain the impacts of perpetrators actions, various Refuges as a therapy tool, Solicitors in explaining to Judges how women find themselves in a position they find it difficult to get out of and most recently by the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) in-house Domestic Violence team as a training aid.

Following Sandra Horley's (CEO of charity Refuge) recent campaign in August 2008 to raise awareness of the warning signs of domestic violence, Paul thought it would be appropriate to launch Silent Voices as a DVD to assist in the campaign, as the first quarter of the program deals with just theses issues.
