Kenya Crisis Affects African Safari Travel

Post election violence in Kenya has seriously affected safari tourism in the country with visitor arrivals dropping steeply and observers predicting hotel closures and lay offs.

Nairobi, Kenya (Issues Wire / PRWEB) January 29, 2008 -- Kenya is a popular safari destination but unrest in parts of the country following the 27th December 2007 polls has seen a major drop in tourist arrivals resulting in possible hotel closures and likelihood of a recession in the travel sector.

Sales Director of Shoor Travel, a tour operator offering African safari and travel services, Sanjay Shoor, says up to 85 percent of their clients have chosen to cancel their Kenya trips through the first quarter while others are opting for a Tanzania safari , Uganda Safari or even Zanzibar where they can still enjoy East Africa's superb attractions.

This has resulted in the possibility of hotel closures and staff layoffs in Kenya as well as losses to local and overseas tour operators who offer Kenya as a safari destination to their clients.

However, though some countries have issued travel alerts discouraging non essential travel to Kenya, clients who have ignored the warning have nonetheless had a trouble-free holiday and there has been no reported incident of a tourist being directly affected by the violence. Britain has now relaxed their warning to restrict travel to only certain parts of the country.

This is because the unrest is political in nature and has been limited only to parts of Kenya largely away from tourist locations. There is hope that the current mediation effort led by former UN chief, Mr. Kofi Annan, will lead to a resolution and return to normalcy for a country largely perceived to be the most stable in East and Central Africa.

Shoor Travel Ltd is an Africa Safari operator based in East Africa and offers a variety of travel services and packages.
