ASP's Richard Goodman Strategic Planning Award recognizes distinction in the practice of strategy. Applicants are judged on four criteria. The first is whether or not the applicant is using cutting edge methodology or processes in their strategic planning. The second is whether or not the applicant is extending a tried and true methodology or using a creative application of several methodologies and tools. The third is whether or not the applicant has a robust performance measurement and management element that links their strategic process, plan and execution. The fourth criterion is whether or not improved organizational performance or a desired outcome is caused by the strategic planning effort.

In the case of the Dubai Municipality, which wins in the government category for 2007-8, strategic planning especially satisfied the second criteria of extending tried and true processes or blending a variety of methodologies to achieve results. The municipality tied their strategic plan back to their Mission, Vision and Values. ASP especially recognizes that the Dubai Municipality's use of technology to assess their shareholder's evaluation of the strategic execution. On a continuous basis the municipality receives automated rankings of its performance that it can then use to improve the process.

The University of San Francisco, winner of the education category for 2007-8, also satisfied the second criteria by blending tried and true methodology to suit their purpose. Of special note was USF's creative process to tie every step of the strategic planning process back to its mission. Each step was tested against the mission to ensure that the entire process supported the University's intent.

The Association for Strategic Planning (ASP) is the preeminent professional association for those engaged in strategic thinking, planning, and action. ASP currently has members in 35 states and several foreign countries, and active chapters operating in twelve metropolitan areas, with others in formation. The chapters serve the local area with networking and educational programs geared to the subject of strategic planning.

The Richard Goodman Strategic Planning Award builds on the broader purpose of the Association of Strategic Planning (ASP) to enable individuals and organizations to succeed through strategic thinking, planning and action. The award is named after Richard Alan Goodman, an expert in organization strategy and innovation and professor of management at UCLA Anderson School of Management, died of cancer in Los Angeles on Jan. 22, 2004. The purpose of the award is:

  • To foster continuing excellence in strategic planning
  • To stimulate innovation in the strategic planning process
  • To honor organizations at the leading edge of strategic practice
